Alberta is the powerhouse of Canada’s oil and gas industry, contributing the majority of the country's fossil fuel production.

Alberta’s Athabasca, Peace River, and Cold Lake oil sands contain an estimated 165 billion barrels of recoverable oil, making them the third-largest oil reserves in the world. These oil and gas resources are primarily located within the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, which is the main source of Canada’s oil and natural gas.

Alberta has historically been one of the largest suppliers of natural gas to the U.S., with major pipeline systems like the Nova Gas Transmission System (NGTL) and TransCanada pipelines. Ontario is also a major destination for Alberta’s oil and gas products, serving as a key point in the distribution network.

Where is Alberta?

Alberta is a province in western Canada, located between British Columbia to the west and Saskatchewan to the east, with the U.S. state of Montana forming its southern border. To the north, it extends toward Canada’s Northwest Territories. Alberta is part of the Prairie Provinces, though its landscape varies from vast plains to the towering Rocky Mountains in the west. The province’s capital is Edmonton, while Calgary, its largest city, is the economic center for the oil and gas industry.

Oil production in Alberta began around the year 1914.

Alberta's Oil Production

When and how did it start?

Crude oil production in Alberta began in the early 1900s, with billions of barrels produced since, making the province a cornerstone of Canada’s energy supply. The first significant discovery came in 1914 at Turner Valley, south of Calgary. While important, technological limitations prevented large-scale development. Alberta’s oil industry truly accelerated in 1947, when the Leduc No. 1 well near Edmonton triggered a major oil boom. This discovery established Alberta as Canada’s leading oil producer, supported by new fields and the rapid expansion of infrastructure such as pipelines, straddle plants, and processing facilities.

By the 1960s, attention shifted to Alberta’s oil sands, one of the largest petroleum reserves in the world. Initial projects focused on surface mining, later evolving into in-situ extraction techniques that could recover deeper, heavier crude. Oil sands development required advanced methods to process the viscous resource, but these innovations created long-term growth opportunities for the province.

Supporting facilities and refineries became critical for transforming crude oil and natural gas into usable products. These plants produce transportation fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, while also supplying asphalt, heating products, and electricity. Today, crude oil and natural gas remain central to Alberta’s energy mix and economic output.

Alberta’s oil and gas industry continues to expand its reach to global markets through new infrastructure, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals and export facilities. Provincial agencies such as Alberta Energy and the Alberta Energy Regulator oversee mineral rights, environmental standards, and emissions management to ensure responsible and sustainable development.

Over more than a century, Alberta has evolved from early discoveries at Turner Valley to becoming a global leader in oil production, oil sands innovation, and energy exports.

Alberta's Gas Production

When and how did it start?

Natural gas was first discovered near Medicine Hat, Alberta. Early usage was limited to local markets.

By the mid-20th century, pipeline infrastructure allowed Alberta’s gas to be exported across Canada and into the U.S. Pipelines are constructed both above ground and underground, and are often drilled beneath water bodies to ensure safe and efficient transportation.

The Turner Valley field was also a significant source of natural gas, with large volumes produced and transported through these pipelines. The flow and pressure within gas pipelines are critical for maintaining efficient movement of gas. Various facilities, including straddle plants and other processing plants, play a key role in the processing and separation of natural gas and liquids. Over time, advancements in drilling technology allowed for increased production from deeper formations, particularly in the Duvernay and Montney formations.

The construction of pipelines and gas infrastructure has been essential to Alberta’s petroleum industry. Alberta Energy, the Alberta Energy Regulator, and the government oversee the management of mineral rights, regulate the industry, and enforce standards to manage environmental impacts such as carbon dioxide emissions.
